Mohan Mallam, MD, FACP, CMD, internist and geriatrician in Barstow, CA

Dementia and Memory Care Center Dr Mohan Mallam, who is American Board Certified in Internal Medicine, and Post Acute and Long Term Care Medicine, has announced the opening of Dementia and Memory Care Center in his offices located at 303 E Buena Vista, Barstow, CA (across from the Library).

Dementia is a syndrome of persistent cognitive impairment in adults. The recognition of this syndrome should trigger an evaluation in every case in order to discover the cause(s) of symptoms and provide for diagnosis, treatment, and if necessary, long-term management of the patient.

It has been estimated that by the year 2050, there will be over 13 million persons with dementia in the US population and over 114 million persons with dementia worldwide. There are various types of dementias. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is by far the most common type and accounts for about 60 - 70% of all dementias. AD is the seventh leading cause of death among the elderly in US claiming almost 66,000 lives annually. Incidence increases with advancing age and nearly 50% of those 85 and over suffer from this disease. Other less common types include vascular dementia (stroke related), frontal lobe dementia and lewy body dementia. In addition, one has to recognize Pseudo dementia of depression and pre dementia in which memory loss is the only symptom without affecting other cognitive functions. Of particular importance is the recognition of potentially reversible dementias such as tumors, hydrocephalus, metabolic disorders, vitamin B12/Folic Acid deficiency, Hypothyroidism, etc.

In addition to symptoms related to memory loss, impairment of function and impairment to various activities of daily living and behavioral problems vary with each individual suffering from dementia. Recent advances have standardized some of the diagnostic tools. For example, Mini Mental State Exam (MMSE), Functional Assessment Questionnaire, Geriatric Depression Screen, Clock Drawing Test, Laboratory studies, Structural and Functional Radiologic imaging studies are some of the diagnostic tools available to clinicians to properly diagnose/manage various dementias.

There are several medications available to treat dementia/memory loss. Several community resources are available for clinicians, families, care givers, and patients suffering from dementia. A number of trials are underway exploring specific medications/compounds which might prevent Alzheimer's disease in cognitively normal persons or at least slow the progression in mild cases of pre dementia.
